According to the 2001 field excavations in Barton Lane, the site of Headington has been occupied since the Stone Age, suggesting a date of around the 11th century BC. Pottery has been found on the Manor Ground, suggesting an Iron Age settlement there in the 7th century BC. The Museum of Oxford has a Roman kiln that dates back to about AD 300. There have also been excavations of Anglo-Saxon burial sites dating back to about 500 AD.
